The Silent Minority

By Dr. Stew Bittman

It was the ancient Hindus, I believe, who said that we lose the majority of our energy and power out thru our mouths. "Silence is golden" is a proverb from our own culture with which we are all familiar. I have noticed lately that my tongue is intimately connected with the parts my brain that do not represent my highest self, and that it often acts as their spokesperson, instantly babbling out things that are almost always best left unsaid. When I can successfully break the connection, and keep my tongue firmly ensconced in its resting position despite the stupid and destructive thots that head its way, I can then remember to use words that connect rather than separate. I can then spew out phrases of love and appreciation, instead of using words as pistols loaded with venom and judgment. But, generally speaking (which I generally am doing), I TALK TOO MUCH! How about you?

When I don't allow Innate to be a watchdog over my tongue, it simply rehashes all the wounds of my past. It sits behind the walls of Jericho that I have erected around my heart, and lobs firecrackers of verbiage from its "safe" place that simply make the walls thicker and higher, when the wrecking ball of Innate can, at any time, swing and make those walls come a tumbling down. My tongue continues to paint gray hues of conservatism and fear across the canvas of my existence, while Innate stands there holding a palette full of the colors of love that can create beauty in every moment. Oh me of little faith. Can't I remember the true artiste that always lurks at the fringes of the curtain of my stage? Can't I connect my tongue to my heart and allow Innate to sing my highest song to the world? Only if and when I shut up once in a while.

I haven't done a silent day in the office for a couple of years and I need to rectify that situation. And even on days that I allow myself to speak, I intend to rein in my tongue and not allow it to gallop unrestrained to the finish line of my ego. Thank God I practice chiropractic, which really requires a minimum of syllables accompanying its beautiful, simple expression. Like in Panama, where we were muzzled by the lack of time and a lack of Spanish, I can deliver the goods in their sweetest, most silent essence, and watch the miracles unfold. I can connect fully with he or she that I am blessed to adjust, and give them that little something extra. My heart speaks thru my hands, and my hands can do all the talking, while I breathe and smile and share my gifts with my utmost energy and power.

(that was not on the exam)
