What’s Happening January 2009

From the Tournament of Roses Parade to the day before the 2009 Super Bowl (SuperBowl XLIII), this month of January is packed full of activities, events, and news happenings, some that will shape year remaining months to come. From the Tournament of Roses Parade to the day before the 2009 Super Bowl (SuperBowl XLIII), this month of January is packed full of activities, events, and news happenings, some that will shape year remaining months to come. I’ve organized a summary of happenings for the month along with resources for those seeking details on specific topics. Best of health to all of you and hope you are enjoying the new year so far.

The 2009 Rose Bowl Parade is already old news but I have some Rose Parade trivia for you. What famous golfer rode upon the Chiropractic Centennial float in the 1995 Rose Parade? Did you guess Tiger Woods? You are correct if you did. The following year Tiger turned pro and signed multi million dollar endorsement deals with Nike and Titleist.

Many people discovered that New Years Day is a postal holiday in the US. On the 1st I created a list of 2009 USPS Holidays and UPS / FedEx holidays as well. There’s another postal (federal) holiday coming up this month, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on Monday, January 19th. Speaking of the magnanimous Reverend King, here is a resource to view the Martin Luther King “I have a dream” speech on YouTube. Check it out before MLK Day and soak in the spirit.

NFL playoffs begin on Saturday with the NFC West champion Arizona Cardinals hosting the Atlanta Falcons. It’s the Cardinals first playoff game since 1947, when they were based in Chicago. The Indianapolis Colts will play the San Diego Chargers Saturday at 8 pm eastern. On Sunday the Baltimore Ravens play at AFC East champion Miami Dolphins and the Philadelphia Eagles play NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings later in the day.

Watch for NFL playoff games the weekend of January 10th and 11th, and January 17th and 18th. This years Superbowl will approach fast being that it’s held on the very first day of February. If you forgot them, here’s some of last years Best Super Bowl Commercials.

After the 1st round of NFL playoff games complete most media will focus attention on the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (aka CES 2009) which is one of the biggest Las Vegas Trade Shows to take place all year. The International Consumer Electronics Show features nearly every product you can think of in the home, auto, business, and mobile electronics space. Watch your favorite tech news sources for early glimpses of products coming to market this year.

The Macworld Expo (popularly referred to as Macworld 2009) takes place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA, from January 5 – January 9. it’s the biggest event of the year for those enthusiastic about Mac products. Check the www.macworldexpo.com site for complete details.

During the week of CES & Macworld, the 2009 Critics Choice Awards presented by VH1 will air live on Thursday, January 8 at 9pm Eastern. Critics choice award winners will be presented live for categories including Best Actress/Actor, Best Animated Feature, Best Comedy Movie, Best Action Movie, and many others. Wall-E, The Wrestler, Changeling, The Dark Knight, Slumdog Millionaire, and others are all up for best picture awards. Expect it to be a power packed event. A world event, President elect Barack Obama’s inauguration in Washington, DC takes place on January 20th and it will mark a historic time for America. While Inauguration Day is on the 20th, from Saturday, Jan. 17 to Wednesday, Jan. 21, events including community concerts, the 2009 Inaugural Parade, and many others will take place. Compounded by MLK Day on the 19th, the week is going to be ginormous for media coverage and celebration.

We have many runners visiting Planet Chiropractic for Marathon related news. The 2009 Chevron Houston Marathon takes place on Sunday, January 18, 2009. In Arizona, the Phoenix Marathon, officially known as the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and Half Marathon (with Smash Mouth) takes place on the 18th as well. According to the Houston Marathon site, registration for the Chevron Houston Marathon is sold out (good for them!). We’ll have a marathon route and summary post with input from local chiropractors available for both marathons by race day. We’ve had great feedback on NYC Marathon coverage, the Philadelphia Marathon, Pasadena Marathon, Honolulu Marathon, and others. Thanks to the many who have continued providing race coverage to us throughout the year.

What did I miss? Oh, Miss America 2009 is live on TLC Saturday, January 24th. Who will be the next Miss America? Watch live or wait for me to post a twitter update as soon as I find out. Before I forget there’s another major running event taking place in January, the ING 2009 Miami Marathon is on Sunday, January 25th. The event features a 5k, half marathon and full 26.2 mile course. Details are on the ingmiamimarathon.com website.

Superbowl 43 is on Sunday, February 1st, and we’ll have chiropractic related football coverage posting that day. When I get info, I’ll update news on superbowl odds and superbowl tickets (maybe someone will win superbowl tickets – not from here), along with related game day details.
