The CDC reported this week that a 63-year-old woman died from an infection of Staphylococcus aureus which was resistant to traditional antibiotics.

Interestingly, staph bacteria are found commonly on the skin without producing any illness. The woman that died had undergone several medical procedures which were reported to increase her risk of infection.

Researchers continue to report that the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria has in part been caused by doctors who too often prescribed antibiotics to patients with viruses such as those that cause colds and flu.

According to researchers at the CDC, 50 million of the 150 million outpatient prescriptions each year are not needed.
