Chiropractic Care for Children and for the Pregnant Mom

By Drew Rubin, DC
Patients often walk into our office and stare in amazement at the huge cork board by the front door. What are they looking at? They see dozens of pictures of children on our Chiro-Kid wall, ranging in age from 10 hours old through elementary and high school. Even the UPS person and other delivery people are taken aback the first time they come in when they see the pictures of happy kids around our front entrance.
Why adjust children? Even newborns? We want to make sure they are as healthy as they can be. Imagine the forces working against their little spines during pregnancy, all jammed up waiting for their time. Then picture the stress of giving birth, sometimes even prolonged labor, or c-sections in which they are literally pulled out (c-sections, contrary to popular belief, are not easier on the child). Now think of how many times a child falls as he/she learns how to walk, run, ride a bike, plays with his friends? It is rare for a child these days to escape their early years without spinal misalignments. And these misalignments won't cause them pain like they might in you and me. They will more likely effect their immune or respiratory system (creating asthma, allergies, ear infections, and chronic illness), or their digestive system (causing colic, constipation, and other stomach issues). Most of the pictures on our walls come with a story, about one childhood ailment after another disappearing under chiropractic care.

Drew Rubin Chiropractic Family - Photo taken at LIFEforce Jan 2010

What about pregnant women? Why adjust them? Think back to your pregnancy, when you were at 8 months. Your center of gravity was way out in front of you, causing you to be totally off balance. That's the last thing you need as you reach the end of term and go into labor. We've seen remarkably healthy pregnancy's and deliveries with women under chiropractic care. Less back pain during pregnancy, healthier, quicker labors, and an under 10% c-section rate (the national average is 25-30%). Plus many women have come in whose baby's were in a difficult position (breech, transverse, facial), and with the famous gentle chiropractic technique known as Webster's, we've watched 87% of women end up with baby being head down. They go on to have the natural childbirth that they thought they'd miss out on.
Chiropractic changed my life in 1984 when I watched 15 years of Asthma and Allergies finally disappear after 3 months of care. That's why I became a chiropractor.
Now it's your turn to heal and become the person you are supposed to be. Don't let health be a limiting factor in what you do.
Life Chiropractic College West Provides Chiropractic Care During Cambodian Mission Trip

Life West News
Hayward, California -- Kim Khauv, a doctor of chiropractic and faculty member and alumnus from Life Chiropractic College West, led a team of twelve college interns who traveled to rural parts of Cambodia to provide chiropractic care. Over the course of two weeks in December 2009 they provided care to over 1500 patients, many of whom where children in orphanages and the sick and elderly in local villages.
This marks the first chiropractic mission trip to Cambodia from Life West. Arrangements were made with cooperation from government officials, village leaders and orphanage directors. The Life West team was joined by volunteer organizer, Aireen Navarro, and volunteer doctors, Amy Vevoda, D.C., and Nathan Clem, D.C., both from Seattle, Washington.

The trip had been a long-held dream by Dr. Khauv, whose family fled Cambodia in 1981 after the Khmer Rouge, a faction of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, began an agricultural reform leading to widespread famine and genocide between 1975 and 1979. After earning his graduate degree as a doctor of chiropractic and a master's degree in public health, he began a non-profit organization, Well-Balanced World, with the sole intention of returning to his homeland and bringing chiropractic to his fellow countrymen.
Dr. Khauv is very grateful to have the opportunity to go back to Cambodia and offer healing to many who have little or no access to any health care. He states, "I sincerely appreciate Life West for their support. The devoted doctors and dedicated interns who came along allowed me to live out my dream of bringing chiropractic to Cambodia." He is planning the next mission trip for December 2010 with the intention of increasing the number of locations and the number of patients served.
Life West, established in 1976, is an accredited non-profit institution of higher learning. Currently over 400 students from across the United States and abroad are enrolled, and over 3,700 graduates of Life West are now providing chiropractic care worldwide. The college's Health Center, a public outpatient facility staffed by approximately 150 senior interns who are guided by licensed doctors of chiropractic, provides affordable health care to more than 1,500 patients per week in the city of Hayward, California. The college and Health Center maintain a Web site at www.lifewest.edu.

Former NFL Wide Receiver Jerry Rice Reveals Secrets to Long, Healthy Career

Parker Seminars News
(Las Vegas) -- Legendary NFL wide-receiver and three-time Super Bowl champ Jerry Rice scored a touchdown among attendees at Parker Seminars Las Vegas — the world’s largest chiropractic seminar — by sharing all the ways he is being a champion for chiropractic. He was joined onstage by fellow chiropractic supporter Linda Cohn, veteran sportscaster and one of the first women to report for ESPN. Both Rice and Cohn are spokespeople for the Foundation for Chiropractic, an organization dedicated to generating positive press for the chiropractic profession, and traveled to Parker Seminars to encourage chiropractors and their assistants to continue delivering natural, quality health care to patients around the globe.
Thinking back to his football career, Rice credits his success on the field largely in part to chiropractic care. "If I had everything in alignment, I knew I could play my best football," said Rice. His training routine included twice-weekly chiropractic adjustments which helped his body recover from all the hard hits and countless tackles. Because Rice firmly believed in the benefits of chiropractic, his teammates began to favor this natural care over the medications that trainers traditionally give. "I wanted to set the standard within football," said Rice. "I knew if chiropractic helped me put up outstanding numbers, it could help my teammates do the same."

Former NFL superstar Jerry Rice - photo credit kinetic

And Rice’s accomplishments are indeed a testament to chiropractic: he was twice named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, won three Super Bowls, and still holds nearly every record as a receiver. He retired as the league’s career receiving leader. Rice was recently announced as a 2010 NFL Hall of Fame candidate.
The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (FCP) made its own version of a "Hall of Fame" induction by presenting Rice with a medal for his commitment to chiropractic. "The Foundation for Chiropractic is getting the word out there, and [being a spokesperson] is a way for me to give back," said Rice. "Chiropractic made football great for me. I was at my best and was always at 100 percent."
- - - - -
Parker College of Chiropractic, located in Dallas, is one of the country's leading educators of healthcare professionals with an international student enrollment.
Palmer College and University of Iowa team up for TMD study

Palmer Chiropractic News
Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research Begins Study with University of Iowa for Conservative Treatment of Patients with Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
Davenport, Iowa -- Researchers at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR), on the Palmer College of Chiropractic campus in Davenport, Iowa, are working in collaboration with the University of Iowa's College of Dentistry and Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences in Iowa City, to explore the feasibility of using chiropractic care to treat people with chronic pain in their face and jaw, classified as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
The TMD study is one of three projects that are part of a four-year, $2.8 million grant awarded to the PCCR in 2008 from the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to establish a multidisciplinary Developmental Center for Clinical and Translational Science in Chiropractic. The TMD study is directed by project co-leaders James DeVocht, D.C., Ph.D., from Palmer, and Clark Stanford, D.D.S., Ph.D., from the University of Iowa.
"More than 10 million Americans suffer from head and neck pain related to TMD, with a lifetime prevalence of 45 percent and a direct care cost of $2 billion," said Dr. DeVocht. "This makes it one of the most common forms of chronic debilitating pain in the United States. Although many medical and dental treatments for TMD are available, few if any have shown any sustained efficacy."
One approach to relieving TMD pain is for chiropractors to provide a specific form of treatment, Activator Methods technique, using a hand-held mechanical device to deliver a quick, gentle adjustment in a precise manner to areas of the head and neck. The TMD component of the Activator approach was developed by Wally Schaeffer, D.C., Coralville, Iowa, and has shown promise in an earlier case series.
For the current TMD study, potential participants will be interviewed by phone and given a dental examination at the Dental Clinical Research Center at the University of Iowa to determine if they qualify. A total of 80 participants will be enrolled and randomly assigned to one of four different treatment groups, all of which will include an intensive self-care program for TMD pain management.
Participants will be equally assigned to either: 1) Activator chiropractic care; 2) a conventional dental splint used for TMD management; 3) a placebo treatment; or 4) the intensive self care program alone. All participants will receive examinations and treatment at the Dental Clinical Research Center in Iowa City and patients assigned to chiropractic care will be referred to a private practice in Coralville, Iowa. Examinations and treatment are provided at no charge to participants. Anyone interested in participating in the study should contact the Dental Clinical Research Center at the University of Iowa at (319) 335-7414.
The Palmer Center of Chiropractic Research will serve as the Data Coordinating Center for this study. Patients will be treated for two months and their progress followed for an additional four months. "The concept that manipulation of the upper cervical spine with the Activator Method can reduce head and neck pain and reduce the potential need for prescription pain medications and improve quality of life are very important issues to understand," said Dr. Stanford of the University of Iowa. "A novel feature of this study design is that the effects of each form of treatment will be evaluated in a masked or blinded fashion. This unique research design allows us to use the expert clinicians for each TMD method and therefore gives us the best chance to understand differences in efficacy of response to this innovative chiropractic method."
The Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research is the largest institutional chiropractic research effort in the world, supplemented increasingly by federal grant funding. These funds, totaling more than $28 million in the last 10 years, have been instrumental in expanding PCCR programs in research education, clinical science, translational research, experimental biomechanics, neurosciences and health services and policy research.
Palmer College earns regional accreditation from NCA for all three campuses

Palmer Chiropractic News
Davenport, Iowa -- Palmer College of Chiropractic has earned another feather in its accreditation cap by receiving regional accreditation for all three of its campuses. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) has notified Palmer that the College—including the main campus in Davenport, Iowa, and the branch campuses in Port Orange, Florida, and San Jose, California has been granted the full, 10-year accreditation by the NCA.
The Davenport and Florida campuses were granted re-accreditation, and the West Campus was granted accreditation by the NCA for the first time. The next comprehensive accreditation evaluation of Palmer College by the NCA will take place in 2018-2019.
"This is an important milestone for Palmer College of Chiropractic," said Clay McDonald, D.C., M.B.A., J.D., Palmer's vice chancellor for strategic development. "It is confirmation that all three of Palmer's campuses meet or exceed the standards of the NCA, which is the largest regional accrediting body in the United States. This regional accreditation is in addition to the long-standing accreditation of Palmer's Doctor of Chiropractic program on all three campuses by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE)."
The specific advantages of regional accreditation, which will now be experienced by Palmer's West Campus along with the Davenport and Florida campuses, is that it allows for the creation of 3 + 1 agreements (transfer of credit agreements with undergraduate institutions) and generally makes it easier for students to transfer credits if they seek additional degrees beyond the Doctor of Chiropractic.
"For the West Campus specifically, this accreditation better situates students to be able to transfer their credits to other accredited institutions, and it better situates the West Campus to initiate 3 + 1 agreements with undergraduate institutions, making it easier for students to enroll," added Dr. McDonald.
In addition to the positive end result, the actual accreditation process was beneficial to the College, added Jeannette Danner, Palmer's senior director of accreditation and licensure. "In order to receive the full 10-year accreditation from the NCA, Palmer College needed to produce a Self-Study Report, which was a detailed analysis of Palmer College spanning the last 10 years. The nearly 100 staff and faculty members from all three campuses who were involved in developing the Self-Study Report learned a tremendous amount about Palmer College, and were able to contribute to a final document that was very well received by the NCA. It was an incredible opportunity for many people at Palmer to learn more about their institution, and the end result was a thorough, thoughtful examination of Palmer's successes and challenges over the last 10 years."
The entire NCA accreditation process was open and transparent, with regular updates on a special section of the College website, and the general public was also invited to view the Self-Study Report and make comments to the NCA.
Palmer College of Chiropractic's Davenport, Florida and West campuses are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and are members of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The NCA may be contacted at 30 North LaSalle St., Suite 2400, Chicago, Ill. 60602, (800) 621-7440 or online at www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org.
December 2009 Chiropractor Career Report
By Michael Dorausch, DC
December 2009 is on its way out and January 2010 is quickly approaching. While chiropractors throughout the world will take time off during the holidays, adjusting Santa Claus and family, the topic of chiropractor careers and chiropractic employment will be back in the forefront when the new year kicks in. Scanning chiropractic classifieds posted during the past week, I expected to see several related to associate positions and vacation coverage, but I didn't realize there were so many work opportunities available for licensed doctors of chiropractic. In a single screenshot from a chiropractors classified advertising RSS feed, I noticed several offices that were hiring, along with a couple of individuals posting their availability to work as associates.

chiropractic careers and employment opportunities

The screen grab image above shows 10 different classifieds posted related to chiropractic employment. They were all posted within a three day period and I don't expect ads for chiropractic clinics looking to hire associates to decrease anytime soon. Regardless of what is going on regarding news of the economy, in speaking to many chiropractors during the month of December, something I came away with was that many are looking to hire chiropractic associates to fill all sorts of positions in their facilities. Some chiropractors are hoping to enjoy more vacation time in 2010, putting vacation and locum coverage on their radar. Other chiropractors I spoke to are seeking to expand their clinics with additional doctors, with positions ranging from exam and report of findings chiropractors to those doing day-to-day adjustments. For the individual willing to work, there's lots of opportunity in the field of chiropractic.
As it's been for most of 2009, classified ad activity for chiropractors, has had a significant focus on jobs and employment. Even though finding chiropractic jobs via Planet Chiropractic has been available more than a decade now, 2009 has shown growth over 2008, which showed growth in online job discoveries over 2007.
In December of 2007 I put together a brief summary of chiropractic employment resources available on the site. Scanning through the information that was posted at that time, it appears as though most of the information remains pertinent to those in the job market for chiropractic healthcare.
The report on chiropractic salaries for those entering the field still holds true, regardless of where one chooses to practice. In the US, there are some income variables that come to play, especially for those doing auto injury care, Worker's Compensation, or strong insurance based clinics. For example, the state of Colorado recently changed their reimbursements for chiropractic care related to automobile collisions. What was previously one of the poorest states for auto injury reimbursement, is now reportedly one of the better states in the nation, for receiving post car accident chiropractic care.
Wherever it is you have chosen to practice chiropractic in 2010, may you be successful in serving your community with the best chiropractic care there is to offer.
Research Begins Patient Recruiting for a Study on Chiropractic and High Blood Pressure

Palmer College of Chiropractic News
Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research Begins Patient Recruiting for a Study on Chiropractic and High Blood Pressure -- Researchers at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) clinic facility, 741 Brady St., Davenport, on the campus of Palmer College of Chiropractic, are looking for 165 people in the Quad Cities with hypertension, or high blood pressure, to participate in a clinical research study with the potential for significant impact on the treatment of hypertension. Patient recruitment began in late November. Participants must have high blood pressure and be between 21 and 75 years of age.
The PCCR is the largest institutional chiropractic research effort in the world, promoting excellence and leadership in scientific research. In addition to research faculty, staff and fellows working in a state-of-the-art facility on Palmer's Davenport Campus, the Center also utilizes the resources of Palmer's two branch campuses - in San Jose, Calif., and Port Orange, Fla. - and collaborators at other institutions in its renowned chiropractic research efforts. The PCCR has the largest budget for research in a chiropractic college, supplemented increasingly by grants from outside sources such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. These funds, totaling nearly $30 million in the past 10 years, have been instrumental in expanding PCCR programs in research education, clinical science, translational research, experimental biomechanics, neurosciences and health services and policy research.
The new collaborative study on hypertension, called Chiropractic for Hypertension in Patients (CHiP), involves the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami, Fla., and Trinity at Terrace Park Family Practice, Bettendorf, Iowa. It is one of three projects that are part of a four-year, $2.8 million grant to the PCCR from the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This grant was awarded to Principal Investigator and Vice Chancellor for Research and Health Policy Christine Goertz, D.C., Ph.D., in 2008 to establish a multidisciplinary Developmental Center for Clinical and Translational Science in Chiropractic.
CHiP will be directed by project co-leaders Dr. Christine Goertz from Palmer and Gervasio Lamas, M.D., a cardiovascular scientist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami who is known for his expertise in the conduct of large, complex, multi-site clinical trials. In addition, Joseph Bergstrom, D.O., director of medical education, Trinity Terrace Park family practice residency program, will be performing the blood pressure screenings and physical examinations for eligibility. Quad-City cardiologist Michael Giudici, M.D., FACP, FACC, FHRS, serves on the study's Data and Safety Monitoring Committee.
"More than 50 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure, making it the most commonly diagnosed disease in the United States," said Dr. Goertz. "Although many medical treatments for diagnosed hypertension are available, only about 30% of patients achieve blood pressure goals. Many patients report that they are unable to tolerate medication side effects and find it difficult to sustain significant lifestyle changes. Thus, a non-pharmacological therapy that lowers blood pressure could become an attractive option to many patients and their physicians."
"The concept that manipulation of the upper cervical spine could reduce blood pressure is both novel and appealing at the same time" said Dr. Lamas. "It is novel because of its originality of thought, and because it is backed up by preliminary data. It is appealing because any treatment for high blood pressure that does not expose patients to drugs and their side effects should be investigated. I really look forward to assisting with the study and seeing the results."
"This should be an interesting trial," added Dr. Giudici. "Work to date has shown that blood pressure responds to other non-pharmacologic interventions such as diet, weight loss, exercise, stress reduction and yoga. There is also some interesting early data on blood pressure response to slowing respiratory rate. Palmer has put together an impressive team of researchers and the infrastructure needed to perform this and other studies."
Potential participants in the study will be examined at the PCCR clinic and Trinity Terrace Park Family Practice Clinic to determine whether they qualify for the study. If so, they will be randomly assigned to one of three different upper cervical treatment groups, all of which will receive chiropractic care at the Palmer Research Clinic for eight weeks. Patients will have their blood pressure monitored on a regular basis while participating in the study. All examinations and treatment are provided at no charge to the patient.
Anyone interested in participating in the study should contact the PCCR clinic facility at (563) 884-5188.
Palmer College of Chiropractic Announces New Chancellor

Palmer Chiropractic News
DAVENPORT, IA (November 4, 2009) -- Following what might be the most expansive search for a chiropractic college leader in the history of the profession, the Palmer College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the unanimous selection of Dennis Marchiori, D.C., Ph.D., D.A.C.B.R., as chancellor of Palmer College. His appointment will take effect December 15, 2009.
Dr. Marchiori was approved by the Board of Trustees at its October 30, 2009, meeting in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida. He was recommended to the full Board after a comprehensive interview process led by a Board-appointed, seven-member ad hoc Succession Planning and Search Committee. The Committee was assisted by Diversified Search, a Philadelphia-based executive search firm, and a five-member search advisory group consisting of notable chiropractic, higher education and community leaders.
"I'm very pleased with the process we followed to identify who we all believe is the most qualified person to lead Palmer College," said Mr. Ken Koupal, chair of the Committee. "Diversified Search, the Committee and everyone involved worked as a true team to recruit and examine a strong pool of 27 internal and external candidates. In the end, we all recognized that the best candidate, Dr. Marchiori, was right here at Palmer."
"From the outset, our goal was to be thorough and committed to finding the right candidate to lead this institution," said Trevor Ireland, D.C., chairman of the Palmer Board of Trustees. "We will never lose sight of our responsibility for doing what is best for Palmer College and we're confident that, under Dr. Marchiori's proven leadership, we will continue to uphold that responsibility."
"For more than a century, Palmer College has been leading the chiropractic profession and contributing to the communities surrounding our campuses," said Dr. Marchiori. "I am honored to continue the successes of the past, including recent regional accreditation and growing extramural research grants, as we advance the College through its next phase of accomplishments. We have energized students and a dedicated team of staff, faculty and administrators to promote our educational mission. Palmer College is an exceptional organization and well-positioned for future success. I'm truly honored to have been selected chancellor."
A Palmer Product: A native of western Pennsylvania, Dr. Marchiori completed his prerequisite work at Penn State University before earning his Bachelor's of Science at Regents College in Albany, New York. He graduated with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College's Davenport Campus in 1990 and went on to earn his Master of Science degree in Anatomy at Palmer in 1992. In 1995, he completed a three-year residency in radiology at Palmer College leading to Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology. Dr. Marchiori received his doctorate in Policy, Planning and Leadership from the University of Iowa in 2005. He has had faculty appointments in the Research, and Diagnosis and Radiology departments. His administrative tenure includes the roles of department chair, dean, vice president of Academic Affairs for the Davenport Campus, and vice chancellor for Academics for the College system. In addition to his teaching and administrative service, he has published numerous scientific articles and two editions of a comprehensive textbook in radiology, titled "Clinical Imaging."
"With nearly 20 years invested with Palmer College, Dr. Marchiori has proven himself as a leader in chiropractic and higher education," said Dr. Ireland. "There is a great sense of pride in watching someone like him live the American Dream, advancing through the administrative levels and excelling with each new chapter."
Passing the Baton: In assuming the chancellor role, Dr. Marchiori will succeed Mr. William Wilke, a respected Quad-City area businessman and a member of the Palmer Board since 1998. In December 2008, following the departure of Chancellor Larry Patten, the Board asked Mr. Wilke to serve until a complete and thorough search could be conducted.
"While we are excited about the future of Palmer College under Dr. Marchiori's leadership, I want to express the Board's sincere gratitude to Mr. Wilke for his service during the past year," said Dr. Ireland. "His guidance and management expertise played a key role in so many of our accomplishments."
Dr. Marchiori lives in Bettendorf, Iowa, with his wife, Cheryl, and four children: Isabella, Sophia, Tony and Olivia. An investiture ceremony is being planned for early next year.
- - - - - - - - - -
Palmer Media Relations: Lori Leipold, Media Relations; Palmer College of Chiropractic
Phone (563) 884-5726; fax (563) 884-5225
College web site at: www.palmer.edu

Chiropratic Team Successfully Finishes Chicago Marathon

Chicago, Illinois -- Chiropractic history was made on Sunday, October 11th on the streets of Chicago when all runners on Team NPCO for Chiropractic successfully crossed the finish line at the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in front of over one million cheering spectators. Waking up early and bearing the chilly 33 degree weather, runners from various parts of the country ran 26.2 miles on behalf of Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization (NPCO).
Team NPCO's theme for the marathon was "run with a vision; a vision for a healthier tomorrow." Wearing neon green jerseys, many runners finished with a personal best record after six months of intense training. Paul Nottoli, who finished with Team NPCO's fastest time, explains that "this year's Chicago Marathon was a great experience. Not only was I able to run a great time of 2 hours 52 minutes and 47 seconds (which is about a 6.5 minute mile, Personal Record for me), I was able to personally raise $2,000 for NPCO and be the top fundraiser. NPCO is a guiding light in building a positive future of healthcare for others around the world with chiropractic care. I will continue to support NPCO even though the marathon is over."
The 26.2 mile Chicago Marathon took the runners through downtown Chicago and its many neighborhoods where thousands of screaming spectators were on the sidelines hoping to spot their favorite runner. A portion of Mile 14 was designated the official cheering station for NPCO and signs reading "Nothing Beats Chiropractic" and "Run with a Vision" were visible as Team NPCO volunteers, family and friends clapped and jumped up and down to keep warm as they cheered the team on.
"As I ran through the streets of Chicago wearing my Team NPCO neon-green jersey, I was amazed by the number of people that cheered me on by yelling out the slogan written across the front of my jersey saying, keep going, Run with a Vision. It kept me going not only that day, but has continued to keep me going as I continue to take care of patients on a daily basis," states runner and chiropractor Dr. Ryan Novak of Hickory Hills (Chicago), Illinois.
There were also many first-time marathon runners who ran on Team NPCO. "I firmly believe that running a Marathon is 90% mental and 10% physical. My friend and fellow runner, Heather Archer, and I made it through our first marathon because we envisioned the hope that we could bring to so many people in pain. We prayed, sang, and leaned on each other to accomplish a goal to bring a better life to men, women, and children everywhere. We wouldn't change our experience for anything in the world and thank God for our amazing experience with Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization!"
Fundraising was not a requirement for Team NPCO runners, but many runners created their own personal fundraising web pages. All monies raised went directly to NPCO, an official 501(c)3 charity dedicated to providing chiropractic healthcare, in the form of non-profit clinics, to those less fortunate around the world.
Dr. Bruce Phillips of North Vernon, Indiana said "the Chicago Marathon was just an awesome experience. I was very delighted to participate and support Team NPCO in their first appearance at the Chicago Marathon! The fans were great and I received many positive comments from fellow runners in support of chiropractic! I was a little sore on Monday, but it was worth it."
On Friday, October 9th, two days before the big marathon race-day, NPCO President, Joshua Heines and NPCO runner Reza Baluchi appeared on Chicago's WGN channel 9 news station for a mid-day news interview talking about Chiropractic healthcare and Team NPCO. Runners were congratulated at the Team NPCO Awards & Recognition Dinner held later that evening in downtown Chicago. Guest Speakers included Dr. John V. Whaley, Dr. Robert Schiffman and Reza Baluchi. Dr. Whaley, the first licensed Chiropractor from Palmer College in the State of Illinois, sported his 1948 Cross Country letterman's jacket and told the runners that their efforts to raise money to provide free chiropractic care to those living in poverty will help them to win their own race for heath. Motivational Speaker and founder of Get The Big Idea Dr. Robert Schiffman reminded runners that they were running with a vision, a vision of Chiropractic that was more far reaching than the streets of Chicago.
Team NPCO runner, Reza Baluchi, played a slideshow for the runners documenting his 43-day running journey from Los Angeles, California to New York, New York in pursuit of the World Record hoping to encourage the runners, and to remind them that anything is possible.
NPCO President, Joshua Heines, spread the word about Team NPCO and Chiropractic by doing a book signing at Bloomingdales on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago on Saturday, October 10th. Costumed characters from his recently published children's book Peter Meets Pedro – On Vacation roamed Bloomindales and took pictures with runners and shoppers. Proceeds from the book are being donated to NPCO.
To view pictures and find out more about Team NPCO for Chiropractic, or to sign up for the 2010 team, please visit www.NPCO.org.
Palmer Chiropractic News
NCCAM Awards Stimulus Funding to Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research for Low Back Pain Study Focusing on Muscle Function
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), has awarded a supplemental grant to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) for its clinical study on the relationship between back pain and possible abnormal function of the supportive muscles in the back. The PCCR is located on the campus of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
Totaling $578,853, the grant was awarded to Palmer by NCCAM through its funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, otherwise known as federal stimulus funds. The money will create at least five new jobs at the PCCR's research clinic facility on the Palmer College of Chiropractic campus in Davenport, Iowa.
This latest award will assist the PCCR in its efforts to improve the care provided to patients with low back pain through clinical research. "We are pleased to be able to bring federal stimulus dollars into the Quad-City area, especially since these funds will allow us to create new jobs while also building our research infrastructure," said Palmer's Vice Chancellor for Research and Health Policy Christine Goertz, D.C. Ph.D. "We are now able to accelerate the progress of our clinical studies by recruiting patients more quickly."
The Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research is the largest institutional chiropractic research effort in the world, supplemented increasingly by federal grant funding. These funds, totaling nearly $30 million in the past 10 years, have been instrumental in expanding PCCR programs in research education, clinical science, translational research, experimental biomechanics, neurosciences, and health services and policy research.
- - - - - - - - - -
Palmer Media Relations: Lori Leipold, Media Relations; Palmer College of Chiropractic
Phone (563) 884-5726; fax (563) 884-5225
College web site at: www.palmer.edu

Santa Monica Los Angeles Metro CCA Chiropractors October Meeting

By Michael Dorausch, DC
California Chiropractic Association (CCA) member and non member chiropractors gathered on Wednesday, October 21st, for a combined Los Angeles Metro and Santa Monica District CCA meeting/presentation. The event, which featured chiropractic attorney Shawn Steel, was held at the world famous International Sport Science Institute, a facility owned by long time chiropractor, Dr. Leroy Perry.

Chiropractor Attorney Shawn Steel and Chiropractor Leroy Perry

The opportunity to visit Dr. Leroy Perry's International Sport Science Institute alone was worth the price of admission ($10 for CCA members and $20 for non-members). Besides providing a location for chiropractic care, the 2 story Cheviot Hills facility included an indoor pool, gym, yoga studio, and other lifestyle/rehabilitative areas.
Attorney Shawn Steel, of Shawn Steel and Associates, APLC shawnsteel.com, gave a terrific presentation related to chiropractic care and questions that may arise on depositions, mediations, and trials. It was a Wednesday evening, a work night for most of the chiropractors in attendance, so Shawn Steel kept the presentation under 2 hours, and it was rich with valuable information to chiropractors practicing in California.
CCA chiropractors provided pizza and beverages for the event and there was a good turnout of active LA region CCA members. It was mentioned that now is a great time to join the CCA (see Time to Join California CCA) and doctors gave mention to the benefits of CCA membership, including events like the CCA Hosting of the 100 Year Lifestyle Weekend, which features 12 Hours Free CE from the California Chiropractic Association. The CCA recently held relicensing events in San Diego and there's a 12 hour event taking place in San Francisco in November 2009 (see San Francisco and San Diego CE Credits from CCA).

LA Metro and Santa Monica Chiropractor CCA Reps Bryen Bell and Michael Tebbe

Combining efforts from the Metro Los Angeles and Santa Monica chapters helped make the night a success, that along with the hospitality of Dr. Perry and the skilled presentation by Shawn Steel. Even if chiropractors took away only one thing Shawn taught, the investment made would provide great returns on investment.
Like the enthusiasm shown for chiropractic by CCA reps like Dr. Kevin Joe (see Kevin Joe and California CCA events), the energy and passion for moving chiropractic forward was shared by elected CCA representatives on hand for the evenings event. Many thanks to chiropractors Michael Tebbe, Bryen Bell, Evan Berk and others for organizing this event.
For more CCA information or to find a doctor of chiropractic supporting the California Chiropractic Association, visit the official website at: calchiro.org.
