More than 20,000 hit the streets for this years 2009 San Diego Marathon. Billed as the Rock and Roll Marathon, runners and walkers alike, took to the pavement for 26.2 miles of outdoor Rock-N-Roll excitement. More than 40 live bands performed and thousands of cheerleading peeps lined the 26.2 mile course, making the event even more exhilarating for those participating. The race began at Sixth Avenue and Palm Street near Balboa Park and this years finish was at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Point Loma.

Khalid El Boumlili, the first Moroccan to win a Rock 'N' Roll Marathon has won in San Diego, with an unofficial time of 2:11:15. Samuel Mugo of Kenya finished with a time of 2:12:34. Yulia Gromova won the womens division with a time 2:27:36, beating her 2008 winning marathon time of 2:28:23. Hellen Kimutai, finished in 2nd place for the womens division, with a time of 2:29:32. A better time than her #1 winning 2007 finish time of 2:32:40, but not enough to take 1st place on 2009. elite marathon runner, Nuta Olaru of Romania, finished 3rd for the womens division.

There were 16760 Finishers (8124 men and 8636 women) for the 2008 RnR Marathon and I included links for previous years as well.

For those that followed the story on runner Tom Bedford, who ran for charity and was shadowed by runners Josh Cox and Ryan Hall (Daria mentioned that in the Stockholm Marathon report), finished with a time around 2:47. That's shy of his goal time of sub 2:25 but it's an impressive time nonetheless.

Marathon Photos -- Give folks time to upload them, but quite a few pro and amatuer photographers will post marathon photos to the Flickr photo sharing service. Wait a few days to search (although some have already posted) and then perform searches for tags or terms like Rock and Roll Marathon, San Diego Marathon, San Diego Marathon 2009, San Diego Rock N Roll marathon Marathon, San Diego Marathon winners, and such. There's always photo sources available on the marathon site, so be sure to check that out too.
