CCA Legislative Conference Governor Jerry BrownFrom the California Chiropractic Association: Governor Jerry Brown has been a loyal friend and an extremely effective and staunch advocate to the profession of chiropractic and the patients it serves. CCA is honored to have Governor Brown as the key note speaker for our upcoming Legislative Conference.

Governor Brown is a true believer in alternative health care, freedom of choice for patients and parity for health care providers. In his capacity as former governor of California (1975-1983), he appointed a chiropractor to a local Board of Medical Quality Assurance, which caused a huge stir in the medical profession. In 1976, Governor Brown signed a bill to run an initiative establishing the Council on Chiropractic Education as an accrediting agency for the chiropractic colleges under the auspices of the California State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. In 1978, Governor Brown signed another bill to allow for an initiative to permit clean-up language to the Chiropractic Initiative Act. Not surprisingly, the California Medical Association presented significant opposition, but he stood by our profession.

CCA proudly endorsed Governor Jerry Brown in the 2006 California Attorney General race and in his unprecedented 2010 California Governor race. Today, Governor Brown continues his long standing and incredible support of the chiropractic profession. In the 2011 legislative session, Governor Brown signed into law four important CCA supported bills: AB 25 (Hayashi), SB 51 (Alquist), SB 543 (Steinberg, Price, Hayashi) and SB 826 (Leno).

AB 25 (Hayashi) – Signed by the Governor. Requires a student athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury to be evaluated and receive a written clearance by a licensed health care provider prior to returning to play. CCA actively supported this bill and successfully advocated strongly to ensure that doctors of chiropractic are eligible to evaluate and clear a student athlete suspected of having suffered a concussion.

SB 51 (Alquist) – Signed by the Governor. Requires specified health plans and insurers to comply with specified medical loss ratios. CCA supported this measure.

SB 543 (Steinberg, Price, Hayashi) – Signed by the Governor. Prohibits the Physical Therapy Board of California from taking disciplinary actions against licensed physical therapists who are currently employed by chiropractic, medical or podiatric corporations for a period of one year. CCA strongly supported this measure.

SB 826 (Leno) – Signed by the Governor. Requires the Workers’ Compensation administrative director to assess an administrative penalty against a claims administrator for a violation of data reporting requirements. CCA supported this measure.

For those of you planning to attend, there is an online registration form available (2012 CCA Legislative Conference – along with more details) on the chiropractic seminar pages.

The 2012 CCA Legislative Conference on Tuesday will be followed by a Fundraiser for CCA Political Action Committee (CCPAC) beginning at 3 PM. The reception and fundraiser is taking place at the Pyramid Alehouse, Brewery & Restaurant, 1029 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Enjoy an IPA with the CCA and celebrate chiropractic in the state of California!
