planetc1.com-news email to the editor
Reuters reported yesterday that hospital infections might be killing 5,000 patients a year in the United Kingdom. The report sheds light on a huge problem occurring in hospitals; infections that develop while patients are in the hospital and then result in death.

According to the report, it is estimated that hospital-acquired infections in the UK may also play a part in 15,000 more deaths per year.

The report emphasizes that about 9% of patients have a hospital-acquired infection at any given time, with many infections being caught after major surgery.

The report also points out the importance of controlling hospital-acquired infections because of the growing problem with antibiotic resistant bacteria.
