A Positive Attitude Equals Better Health

Terence Monmaney of the L.A. Times reports that “research into the topic of optimism finds not only that positive people live longer, but that a sunny outlook can be taught.”

Science has largely avoided the subject of optimism during the past century. The topic of optimism was so disreputable “that one of modernity’s most influential thinkers, Sigmund Freud, equated it with ignorance.”

Dozens of recent studies are now showing that optimists do better at work, in school and sports. These same individuals “suffer less depression, achieve more goals, respond better to stress, wage more effective battles against disease and, yes, live longer.”

Shelley Taylor, a UCLA psychologist who has done numerous studies in the field of optimism says it is an “underrated resource.” She says, “It gives you much more than people imagine it does.”

Taylor suggests that an “optimistic frame of mind actually modulates the nervous system in a way that bolsters immune-system defenses” as demonstrated in several scientific studies. In yet another study, researchers found that those with a positive attitude had higher levels of disease-fighting killer cells in their blood than did the negative individuals.

However researchers choose to measure it, “optimism… is linked to desirable characteristics – happiness, perseverance, achievement and health” says Christopher Peterson, psychologist at the University of Michigan.

In the words of Dr. Sid Williams, I feel HEALHTY, I feel HAPPY, I feel TERRRRIIIFFFFFIIICCCCCC!!!!!!!
