The articles suggest evidence that many Americans may be poisoning their livers by taking toxic doses of acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, and the government is considering stiffer warnings to prevent this. For some, news that acetaminophen can be dangerous and even deadly is not new. But the government, and others, are beginning to wonder if enough people are aware of the dangers. According to the articles, the latest concern regarding acetaminophen overdoses are those who take too much for too long, or mix acetaminophen with cold/flu remedies, or those just taking more pills than what is recommended. Some believe that since acetaminophen is available without a prescription, people think that it is safe. However, some suggest that overdoses from acetaminophen could be a greater cause of liver failure then some of the prescription drugs that have recently been banned by the FDA. In a recent study of more than 300 acute liver failure cases, 38 percent involved acetaminophen, according to articles. It appears as though the pain reliever hospitals recommend most is putting many folks in the hospital. Mixing doses of Tylenol can be deadly. Many parents may not be aware that mixing up doses of infant Tylenol drops with children's Tylenol liquid is deadly - the two are not interchangeable, according to an MSNBC article. A mother of a 23-year-old who was taking prescription Tylenol for a wrist injury and then later died from liver failure stated, "if I had been more educated to acetaminophen products, could I have steered him clear?" If I can educate more people about the deadly effects of drugs can I help to steer them clear? Is one drug safe and not another? What about those who don't take Tylenol and acetaminophen? Do those people really exist? Those people certainly do exist and they and their families live healthy, fulfilling lives. Unfortunately, that is a bigger secret than the deaths caused by drugs.
