ADHD in the news
planetc1.com-news email to the editor

From Yahoo Health News and MSNBC Health
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released new guidelines on Monday aimed at helping physicians diagnose attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.(ADHD)

There has been much news regarding ADHD and it's over diagnoses and misdiagnoses. There has also been increasing news regarding ritalin and it's use in children under the age of six.

While its great that the AAP has released guidelines to better deal with these issues, one must ask the question, why now and not ten years ago?

Where were the pediatricians and the medical profession on this issue ten years ago? Although news regarding ritalin and ADHD is now popular, it surely is not new to many of us. Who has been lining their pockets with the income these "over diagnoses" and inappropriate uses of ritalin have supplied? It surely has not been the parents of these children.

Also in this weeks news:
A recent study suggests that a prior infection with streptococcal bacteria may contribute to the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

On one side, one may suggest increased use of antibiotics or maybe even a vaccine to hopefully prevent the strep infections or maybe a combination of vaccines, antibiotics and ritalin and whatever other drugs would be needed to treat the side effects of those initially prescribed. On the other, one may want an immune system that functions optimally thus decreasing the risk of developing an infection in the first place and allowing the body to do what it does best.
