American Chiropractic Association Sues HMO

Are HMO’s illegally conspiring against the chiropractic profession by imposing unfair payment terms for chiropractic services rendered? The American Chiropractic Association says yes.

According to several newsfeeds, the ACA, along with the Virginia Chiropractic Association, filed suit on Friday against Trigon Healthcare Inc. and the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

The suit accuses Trigon and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of engaging in numerous illegal acts which include “racketeering, extortion, mail fraud and antitrust violations” according to articles.

The issue involves “manipulation services” and the ACA has claimed that chiropractors are being paid less than other doctors for those services. Who, by the way in the chiropractic profession pushed for terminology such as “manipulation services”?

According to an article on Yahoo news, it was also mentioned that “Trigon pays chiropractors 40% less than medical doctors for the same or similar services” although a representative for Trigon has stated that the plan “pays the same for spinal manipulation no matter who performs the service.”

Do chiropractors and medical doctors provide similar services as stated in the article or is the service provided by a chiropractor unique and distinctly different?

As Dr. Christopher Kent so often says, in order to destroy a culture you must first destroy their language. Our chiropractic language is uniquely distinct and represents specifically what it is that chiropractors do and don’t do. Those that fail to use chiropractic terminology to define their service ultimately have no one to blame but themselves when miscommunication occurs.

Congratulations to all of the chiropractors worldwide who have done such a wonderful job not only educating their patients, but also in educating those in their business and social environments as well.

And as a positive to the ACA, fantastic job of getting info of their lawsuit to the press, we had multiple newsfeeds reporting on the issue within hours of it’s release.
