Are We Aging Elegantly or Just Plain “Gettin’ Old”

Ever notice how people age at such different rates? Some people, like Dick Clark of “American Bandstand” look almost as good today as they did 20 or 30 years ago while others (such as some of our classmates we haven’t seen for the past 10 years or so) have aged so badly we can hardly recognize them. Dr. Joe, the 77 year old DC from Chicago, is one of those who never seemed to age so I asked him about the secrets of his “Fountain of Youth.” As helpful as ever, he was willing to give me his recipe for experiencing “youth” forever.

Dr. Joe’s Anti-Aging Formula:
Get Regular Chiropractic Adjustments—We should all know this without even mentioning it. European studies have shown that spinal adjustments are one of the most important methods we can use to enhance the strength of our immune system. We know that our nervous system controls and coordinates everything in the human body. The human body doesn’t even digest and assimilate the food we eat if the autonomic nervous system is not functioning normally. We should all allow ourselves to receive the very best in this field including both spinal adjusting and cranial adjusting. The “cutting edge” in Chiropractic is at least 50 years ahead of anything that medicine has to offer in this area.

Clear The Interference In Our Educated/Innate Minds—We all constantly receive the Healing/Loving energies of the Universe flowing abundantly through us (its our birthright) …unless we interfere with that flow in some way. These interferences “stand in the way” of this wonderful universal energy that can heal us all and keep us young. Fortunately we in Chiropractic have at our disposal several excellent methods of removing these blocks. The work of Dr. Jim Parker is outstanding for clearing what he called “Quality Interference” in the mind(s), as is NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP), B.E.S.T. (level III), and Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), plus others. Clearing interference in the Educated/Innate minds is essential to a happy, healthy, productive life.

Have A Purpose In Life That Is Bigger Than Ourselves—This should be easy for those of us lucky enough to be a part of Chiropractic! I truly believe that each of us in Chiropractic was led to this profession, we didn’t choose it. As we get the “Big Idea” that B. J. Palmer talked about, we begin to realize that we are a major part of an “idea whose time has come.” More than 15% of the people in the western world went to alternative healers last year and psychologists tell us that any time 10% or more of a population accepts an idea, it will inevitably sweep through the entire population. So we’re riding the crest of the greatest revolution the world has ever known, a revolution in Living Philosophy and Healing! What could be more exciting and what could possibly give us a greater feeling of being a vital part of something much bigger than ourselves, something that will be here long after we’re gone? And we’re the leaders in bringing it to this planet!

Keep Our Cardiovascular System Working at it’s Best—As we all probably know, there are food supplements available that can strengthen the cardiac muscle and the adrenal glands (among other organs) and restore the normal tone of the muscular coat of the arteries as well as clearing cholesterol plaques that can block the arteries. There are various excellent forms of nutritional analysis available in this profession that can be used to determine our need for these nutrients, including Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA), Total Body Modification (TBM), and others.

We also have to consider the important role of exercise in our lives. Regular moderate exercise opens the capillary beds in the muscles and aids in the normal flow of blood throughout the entire body. One half hour each day of rapid walking will suffice, but all of us are familiar with other effective forms of exercise that we can use (which we recommend to our patients, but do we do them ourselves?). Whatever kind of exercise we like will probably be the best for us and we will be more likely to stick with it. Consistency is the key when it comes to any kind of exercise.

And Dr. Joe especially recommends stretching exercises of various kinds. Keeping our body flexible and elastic will also help us keep our mind flexible and elastic.

Watch Our Diet And Weight—This is fairly simple to talk about but not quite as simple to put into effect. Dr. Joe recommends that we eat more vegetables (either raw or lightly steamed) in our diet while we cut down on the amount of protein we’re eating. Cut way down on the refined sugar in our diet (probably the single most important dietary change we can make), moderate our salt intake, add a source of organic trace minerals to our diet to make up for the lack of these nutrients in modern produce, and try to keep the amount of fat in our diet below 20%. Eat less generously than we may have been eating in the past but try to eat the foods we enjoy, in moderation. We will digest and assimilate foods we enjoy a lot better than those foods we don’t like. Keep our weight within 10% of what is “normal” for our age and height (but we may be the only one who can determine what is “normal” for us).

Get Plenty Of Fun, Rest, And Recreation—Just as we have to recharge the battery on our car when it runs down so, too, do we have to recharge our physical battery (preferably before it runs down). A periodic change in scenery and activity is vital to keeping our energy level at its peak. This is essential to ensure our continued health and vitality. Only we can decide how much of this we personally need, but we all do require this. We should take short daily breaks, mini vacations (long weekends), maxi vacations (one to two weeks or more), and any other R & R that our body tells us it needs, and it will tell us.

Remove Excess Toxins From Our Body When Necessary—Toxins build up in our bodies as we are exposed to greater and greater quantities of air borne chemicals, food borne pesticides and herbicides, questionable food additives, and even normally occurring toxins in our environment. Our bodies may need help to be able to dispose of these chemicals that are potentially dangerous to our immediate and long range health.

Learn about Herbs and the herbal formulas that have been used in Europe and Asia for centuries to cleanse the human body. They have stood the test of time and do a good job of keeping our system clear of environmental toxins. Anything that causes us to sweat a great deal such as vigorous exercise, sauna and steam baths, and fast moving sports will further help our body to rid itself of unwanted toxins.

B.E.S.T. (level III) teaches that we can become toxic from our thoughts and teaches an effective method of clearing these types of thoughts.

Take A Powerful Anti-Oxidant Every Day—We’ve all heard about the “free radicals” that form in our cells as a result of daily activity and can greatly accelerate the “aging process.” These are formed from oxygen molecules and are potentially dangerous to the health of the cell. They can cause much cell destruction if they are not neutralized in some way. Our bodies normally produce a substance (Super Oxide Dismutase – SOD) to accomplish this, but as we go through life we produce less of this important chemical. If we are over the age of 25, we are probably not producing enough SOD to completely neutralize the free radicals and are running the risk of cell damage throughout our body. To prevent this, we should all be taking a strong anti-oxidant such as Melatonin, Pycnogenal, or Microhydrin every day to neutralize these free radicals.

If we follow Dr. Joe’s guidelines (and any others that we may have come up with ourselves), we should all be here to celebrate our own centennials… Healthy, Happy, Feeling Great, and Looking Good! Get the “Big Idea”, stay in adjustment, have fun, eat and think well, and let’s all stay here to lead this planet into this new century of natural healing. The world is waiting for us!
