A report was released by the state of California Department of Developmental Services yesterday with findings of a 97 percent increase in Autism cases during the past four years. On the topic of Autism, Burton had this to say, “If we want to find a cure, we must look to the causes. We must do this now before our health and education systems are bankrupted, and before more of our nation' children are locked inside themselves with this disorder.”

According to information on the website, the state of California is now adding 11 new cases a day, 7 days a week to its Autism caseload. Once considered a rare disorder appearing in as few as 1 in 10,000 births, autism is now the number one disability entering California’s Developmental Services system.

Liz Birt, an attorney with Burton's Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness, said that during the 1990s, the U.S. childhood vaccination schedule exposed some children to 125 times the federal limit on mercury exposure set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Birt said the CDC and the FDA have been slow to admit the damage the vaccines may have caused because key officials want to keep their jobs and vaccine manufacturers do not want the liability.

"It all comes down to money," Birt said.
