Congress of Chiropractic State Associations partners with Army OneSource to launch Healing Hands 4 Heroes

At its 2010 Annual Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations formally announced a partnership with Army OneSource, an Army Family and Morale, Welfare Recreation Command initiative that provides support, services and opportunities for the entire Army Family.

COCSA formalized the partnership by launching a nationwide program, Healing Hands 4 Heroes, and by becoming the first health care profession to sign an Army Community Covenant. The covenant outlines COCSA members pledge to work in communities nationwide to educate doctors of chiropractic on the unique needs of service members and their families and to commit to maintaining the health, well-being and readiness of Armed Forces veterans and their families.

Speakers included Dr. Kate C. Rufolo-Dreher, president elect of COCSA, spoke on behalf of the military family, as she is not only a chiropractor but also a military wife. She stated, “The military family sacrifices for love and although they are the silent ranks…their duty is to keep home for their soldier”. She told the attendees, “You may never be asked to defend your country as our soldiers have and will, but we have this opportunity…to do this because it is right and because this profession has a long history of reaching out to help and to heal.”

CW4 Darren “Doc” Dreher, also a Chiropractor and a Blackhawk pilot who recently returned from a tour in Iraq also spoke. He shed some light on life as a soldier and on his experiences as a DC in theater.

Retired Army Brigadier General, Rebecca Halstead praised the partnership by saying, “COCSA represents state chiropractic associations in all 50 states, making this a powerful professional partnership and covenant event that promises to bring greater opportunities for the chiropractic profession and the military to deepen and strengthen their joint efforts on behalf of our service members and their families.”

State Chiropractic Associations will work in partnership with Army OneSource Community Support Coordinators to encourage chiropractors to register for online continuing education courses titled Treating the Invisible Wounds of War. Cleveland Chiropractic College has reviewed and approved the Treating the Invisible Wounds of War Series for continuing education credit. With a registration code from the local State Chiropractic Association, chiropractors can register free of charge for any of the three courses: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Issues of Women Returning from Combat. These courses will assist the chiropractor who may see a veteran or family member on an unrelated issue to develop a better understanding of the culture in which veterans and their families live and work, and provide best practices for identifying, and assessing health disorders that result from the trauma of war.

A recent study from the VA Medical Centers cites that over 1 million returning Veterans are eligible for VA services, but only 45% sought care from the VA. That along with the number of National Guard and Reserve soldiers who are or have deployed has prompted the Army to seek community partnerships so service members and their families can get the support they need within their communities. These partnerships help fill gaps in programs and services available to Service Members, especially those who live far from Military installations.
