Doctors of Chiropractic — Scope Expansion into Drugs

Letter to the Governor
Governor Frank Keating, of the State of Oklahoma

Dear Governor Keating:

This morning I became aware of the proposal to amend the Chiropractic scope of practice to include the use of pharmaceuticals in the State of Oklahoma. This, if passed would be a mistake with possible grave consequences. With 100,000 deaths per year in the nation from PROPERLY prescribed medications by MD’s, imagine what could happen if 90,000 Doctors of Chiropractic were allowed to dispense drugs. The Chiropractic profession has, for over 100 years, stood as a choice in health care for the public. To allow this change in legislation would be disastrous, not only to the Chiropractic profession, but to your public as well. Our century old practice tenants are based in a philosophy that the body has a self-healing, self-regulating mechanism that needs no help, just no interference to the controlling nervous system to maintain health and well being. While Chiropractic is not offered as a panacea, it is for many, the primary health care model and a chosen way of life to stay well and avoid the inherent, unavoidable dangers associated with drugs and the medical model. This basic practice distinction between the two professions must remain clear to your health care consumer.

I have served the public as a Chiropractic Doctor for 28 years, served 8 of those years on the Michigan Board of Chiropractic, licensing and regulation division, 5 as Chairman of that board. It is with deep conviction that I encourage you to reject any maverick, misguided, self-serving notion on the part of the people behind this legislation, that this is good for the public or that the Chiropractic scope should now, or in the future, include any form of prescription or non-prescription drug therapy.

Respectfully and sincerely yours,

Stephen S. White, DC Traverse City, Michigan
