Drugs, Guns, and Chickens Too

Here are some stories appearing in recent news that may be of interest to you. First, health care in the U.S. Problems are not just a result of bad handwriting.

Health Care in Critical Condition
“A new report from the prestigious RAND Corporation says the quality of health care for most Americans is surprisingly poor: The group ranked the U. S. medical establishment 37th in overall performance worldwide.”

“It’s hard to believe that we do this in front of a system that is providing mediocre results at best, and is disorganized and using ancient technology.”

Hey, Let’s spend more money on drugs. Question for you: the healthiest people you know take how many drugs daily?

Study: Drug Spending Increased 20 Percent between 1999 and 2000
The article byline reads, “It’s not your imagination. The price of drugs is going up.” Excuse me, I did not notice.

Twenty percent increase between 1999 and 2000? That’s the 5th year in a row. Those T.V. commercials are paying off in big numbers for the folks at the drug pushing lab.

“Retail prescription drug spending in the US increased for the fifth straight year in 2000.”

“Most of these drugs are the blockbusters many Americans have come to know by name and see advertised more and more.”

And finally, this was posted in January of 2000 but there have been some requests for it recently. Which is safer, your gun or your doctor?

Number of physicians in the US = 700,000
Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year = 120,000
Accidental deaths per physician = 0.171

Number of gun owners in the US = 80,000,000
Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) = 1,500
Accidental deaths per gun owner = 0.0000188
(U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms)

Therefore, medical doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
