Families Sue Pfizer Over Experimental Drug
planetc1.com-news email to the editor

According to a report from ABC News, Pfizer Inc. has been sued by families of about 30 Nigerian children who either died, suffered brain damage, or suffered other serious injury after receiving an experimental meningitis drug.

According to the report, children had unwittingly participating in the test which involved splitting some 200 children into separate groups who then received either a "never before tested on humans" form of the drug Trovan, or low doses of a control drug called ceftriazone which allegedly resulted in six deaths.

During a 1996 epidemic of bacterial meningitis in Northern Nigeria, representatives from Pfizer allegedly exploited the misfortune of the families there for its own benefit, according to the report, conducting experimental studies rather than providing humanitarian relief, as charitable organizations in the region were doing.

On June 9, 1999, the FDA issued a public health advisory to physicians concerning the risks of liver toxicity associated with the use of Trovan, an antibiotic used to treat many different types of infections.
