From Zero to 136893 in 10 Years

December 2nd, 2008 marks the 10 year anniversary of the launching of planetchiropractic.com as a destination for chiropractic information on the Internet. On that first day in 1998 there were zero visits to the newly created chiropractic domain name, and more than 3650 days later, those numbers have thankfully grown higher. Being that we are reaching our 10 year launch date anniversary, I chose to screenshot the websites log files for the month of November, as a historical snapshot. While this is a potentially bland post, it may help you learn something about basic site statistics.

The image below shows statistical data on visitors to the planetchiropractic.com website for the month of November, 2008. There are a total of five categories shown. Those categories include the day of the week, number of visits, pages, hits, and bandwidth.

I can recall showing statistical data like this only one time before, and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s likely boring information for the vast majority of people visiting this site. I’ve been posting content here for the past 10 years, so pardon me while I explain for a few minutes about what this info mumbo-jumbo means.

The day of the week (first column in gray) is pretty self-explanatory, it shows the 30 days in November of 2008 (screenshot was taken this morning after all November data was collected). I’ve lost count as to how many times over the years people have asked me “how many hits” does your web site receive? Looking at the chart for the month of November (column in light blue), I can tell you that it received 2,243,888 hits (a bit over 2 million). I never liked using the term “hits” when talking about web site traffic, and most webmasters rarely talk about hits when measuring site data.

The same goes for bandwidth (the last column in dark green). I’ve never really found myself in the discussion of how much bandwidth our chiropractic website requires, I don’t think anyone has ever asked. The other two columns (number of visits and yellow and pages in blue) are a bit more important to me, and offer a better look as to what kind of traffic the site is receiving.

Think of the number of visits as people and the pages as the parts of the website those same people are viewing. Some tech person may explain it differently, that’s pretty much how I see it. So for example, on the first of November, 8728 people made a visit to the planetchiropractic.com website. During their combined visit, they viewed 30,596 pages of content. On that day, people viewed an average of 3 1/2 pages, before going somewhere else.

If you scan the two columns of the chart, you will see the numbers change every day, for the 30 day period. In my experience, that’s pretty typical for any site on the web. What you don’t want to see are huge spikes up (like 12,000 plus visitors on November 2nd) followed by huge plunges down (halfway over 6000 isn’t so bad for the following day). It’s nice to see people actually visiting the site on a consistent basis, and I think pretty much any webmaster would agree, that more visitors are better than less visitors (as long as they are in your target market). If you haven’t figured that out yet, ours happens to be the industry of chiropractic.

The two numbers I am most pleased with are the totals for number of visits and pages. November 2008 total number of visitors was 136,893 and total pages viewed were 877,392. I consider those digits multiple blessings. That doesn’t mean a whole lot of diddly to anyone else but us at planet-chiro headquarters, but that’s just fine by me. We’d rather be focusing on posting news articles rather than statistical data posts.

Hey, did I mention one could find chiropractors here?
