Hope Day Another Huge Success
planetc1.com-news email to the editor
From: Drs. Steven Silk & Raelynn Cancel

"We may need another truck" commented one of the volunteers from the Wiarton Salvation Army Food Bank upon entering the reception area of the Wiarton Family Chiropractic Centre to pick up the proceeds of 8th annual H.O.P.E. Day food drive.

An overwhelming pile of food, which ultimately weighed in at a whopping 2,388 pounds, awaited him and others who came to box the goods for delivery to the Wiarton area Food Bank. "The members of our practice have opened their hearts and shared their blessings again" said Dr. Steven Silk as he helped load the bounty from the Brown Street facility into awaiting pickup trucks.

"I truly believe that the heart of any community is found in the small acts of kindness one person does for another" said Dr. Silk. "When a whole bunch of people each do a little, you end up with this" motioning to the boxes being loaded onto a trailer for transport to the food bank. "It is also a reflection of the spirit of the people who have made a choice to be healthier through chiropractic, for these people see a bigger picture for small-town Ontario."

H.O.P.E (Helping Other People Eat) has brought in 15,390 pounds of food since being developed by Dr. Silk's partner and wife, Dr. Raelynn Cancel, in 1996. "While we always look for ways of doing something for the community, I wish this wasn't necessary" said Dr. Cancel in explaining the exchange of fees for food concept of the food drive. "But the undeniable truth is that the number of people contacting the food bank is going up, at a time when donations are low."

Salvation Army Envoy Mary Millar agreed, stating "The timing of this event and the volume of food it brings in are truly gifts from God." She commented that the bad weather of January had led to a 20% increase in the number of families seeking help. "Without this event I don't know how we could do it" she said.

"We'd like to thank everyone who made a donation, no matter how big or how small, for each of you has done your part to make life a little easier for your fellow citizens" said Dr. Silk, "We're proud to have you as members of our practice, and our town."
