Hormone Replacement Therapy – HRT Links

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

It is as if this is the headline story on every major network worldwide. These links go fast but we collected them so you could get the data you need to answer patients questions. If a link comes up dead, send us an email and we’ll see if we can relocate the source. Several links are duplicated for that purpose.

Amongst the links below, be sure to read the Yahoo! link, “Hormone Replacement Study a Shock to the Medical System.” It is one of the few that gets in depth on the subject. Also, check out the Forbes link and other financial links as well. The Forbes article, asks some serious questions that others failed to.

Many medical doctors and other health care professionals have expressed great concern as to the marketing of these drugs and the lack of science related to prescribing them. Since when do MDs prescribe drugs based on beliefs they have (cultish pseudo-science) as opposed to relying on proven scientific methods?

Here are what the news feeds read

From the Washington Post… “A landmark scientific study has found that giving hormones to healthy menopausal women does more harm than good, a finding that overturns doctors’ long-held beliefs about the treatment’s benefits and creates new uncertainty for millions of women.”

From the Globe… “Six million U.S. women use this hormone combination, either for short-term relief of hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms or because of doctors’ long-standing assumptions that long-term use would prevent heart disease and brittle bones and generally keep women healthier longer.

Two of those assumptions are wrong, the National Institutes of Health announced Tuesday. In fact, years-long use of estrogen and progestin increased otherwise healthy women’s risk of a stroke by 41 per cent, a heart attack by 29 per cent and breast cancer by 24 per cent.”

From Nando Media… “Wyeth shares tumbled 19 percent Tuesday after the government abruptly halted a study which found a hormone therapy that is one of it top-selling drugs can increase a women’s risk of breast cancer, strokes and heart attacks.”

From the Kansas City Star… “…the biggest hurdle is drug industry marketing, both in ads patients see and promotions to doctors, that suggest hormones are great for overall health. ‘We hope that truth will win out over advertising.'”

From the San Francisco Gate… “Risks from the drug add up over time.”

From CNN… “The cardiovascular and cancer risks of estrogen plus progestin outweigh any benefits — and a 26 percent increase in breast cancer risk is too high a price to pay, even if there were a heart benefit.”

From Bloomberg News… “Shares of Wyeth fell $8.24 to $41 in early morning trading, the biggest drop in at least 20 years.”

From MSNBC… “Not only did hormone replacement therapy not prevent heart disease, it actually increased the risk of breast cancer, strokes and blood clots, say researchers.”

From Yahoo! News… “This is a dangerous drug…”

From Smart Money… “At Least It’s not another accounting scandal. – Shares of Wyeth (WYE) dived 24.3% to a five-year low of $37.30 on Tuesday after a study showed that women taking Prempro, the company’s hormone-replacement therapy, experienced an increased risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.”

From the Straits Times… “The risks are so high that the United States government has stopped a major study of more than 16,000 women on HRT, and warned doctors and patients against using the medication.”

From the Baltimore Sun… “Yesterday’s announcement upset the conventional wisdom about disease prevention and sparked a flood of anguished calls to doctors’ offices.”

From MSN… “”The whole purpose of healthy women taking long-term estrogen/progestin therapy is to preserve health and prevent disease,” write Harvard cancer researchers Suzanne W. Fletcher, MD, and Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH. “The results of this study provide strong evidence that the opposite is happening for important aspects of women’s health, even if the absolute risk is low. Given these results, we recommend that [doctors] stop prescribing this combination for long-term use.”

From Yahoo! News… “The news of the study’s findings came as such a surprise that doctors were inundated yesterday with calls from patients. Some medical experts on the hormone therapy said they had given up and taken their phones off the hook.”

From Australia News… “An urgent government review of the safety of hormone replacement therapy was announced last night after a landmark study found the drugs increased the risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke.”

From Forbes.com… “If a drug like Prempro, which has been in use for years, still have undiscovered side effects that potentially could be fatal, then how much do doctors really know about the brand-new chemicals they are prescribing? New dangers are emerging with alarming frequency.”

From The Globe & Mail (Canada)… “It shows how effective the marketing influence is despite the evidence,” said Jim Wright, a UBC professor of medicine who is the managing director of the Therapeutics Initiative. “Hopefully, now they will get the point.”
