It’s Cold Gin Time Again – Daily Drink or Two Good for Heart

(note: if you take any of this too seriously you could probably use a drink.)

A new study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, suggests that moderate drinking reduces heart attack risks for healthy men. If you’re planning to belly up to the bar as a result of reading the study, make sure you are following all of the other recommendations and that you fit into the category of a healthy male.

According to the study, if you are male and don’t smoke, have a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise, and consume alcohol in moderation (less than two glasses per day), your chances of having a myocardial infarction (heart attack) are less than the chances for a male with a similar lifestyle who never drinks alcohol.

According to the study, none of the men were overweight, and all had a body mass index of under 25. They exercised vigorously for at least 30 minutes a day or more. They all ate plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fiber, chicken, fish, and polyunsaturated fats. They also kept their intake of trans-fats, red and processed meats low.

When it comes to exercise most of us are thinking things like working out in the gym, Yoga, Pilates, Krav Maga (very popular here in LA), and running. We may not be a likely bunch to be drinking one or two alcoholic beverages per day so I did some research on the Kings of alcohol consumption and er “exercise.” After reading the study it makes sense to me that sex (in the form of vigorous exercise), drugs (alcohol), and rock ‘n roll (more vigorous exercise) can be good for your heart.

Ace Frehley (Space Ace from Kiss) in the classic Kiss song “Cold Gin” offered the following…

Its time to leave and get another quart
Around the corner at the liquor store
the cheapest stuff is all I need
To get me back on my feet again

Mr. Frehley, that’s fine, but be sure to consume plenty of vegetables, fruits, fiber, chicken, fish, soy, nuts and polyunsaturated fats along with your diet of cheap cold gin. Remember, there is a two drink limit, and you should also be getting plenty of exercise. Try running to the liquor store on the other side of town as it will better get your heart rate up, as walking around the corner just doesn’t cut it.

Turns out there is some good heart health advice in Rock and Roll music. In your face Tipper Gore! The Australian hard rock band AC/DC album Back in Black song “Have a Drink on Me” offers this…

Whiskey, gin and brandy
With a glass I’m pretty handy
I’m trying to walk a straight line
On sour mash and cheap wine
So join me for a drink boys
We’re gonna make a big noise

To the bad boys down under, it’s only two drinks a day so drop one of the whiskey, gin or brandys. If by trying to walk a straight line you are exercising, great, you are off to a good start. If you’re on the side of the highway with the PoPo then probably not so good. Making a big noise is fine. Have fun, loosen up, but try not to disturb your non-drinking neighbors in the process. And on your next visit to the chiropractor please remember… don’t worry about tomorrow, get adjusted today, bring your checkbook, or some good MedPay. Have a drink on me.

Our local Los Angeles boys from Guns N’ Roses (who in their hey day travelled with a tour chiropractor), on their debut release “Appetite For Destruction,” had this to say about drinking…

Wake up late honey put on your clothes
Take your credit card to the liquor store
That’s one for you and two for me by tonight
I’ll be Loaded like a freight train
Flyin’ like an aeroplane
Feelin’ like a space brain
One more tonight

Axl Rose has the right attitude but let me add some suggestions. Rather than getting up late try getting up early. Putting on your clothes is always a great idea if you’re going to go out in public. Follow my Ace Frehley cold gin suggestions and choose a liquor store on the other side of town. You may as well go with your honey so that you both get plenty of exercise. Using a credit card is good so you’re not running with cash but make sure the liquor store accepts them. I don’t know if two drinks will get you feelin’ like a space brain but it’s worth a try.

While I don’t think any of the research on heart health and alcohol consumption talked about which kinds of alcohol to drink, my gut tells me to stay away from the cheap NightTrain, Mad Dog 2020, and Gin, even though you rock ‘n rollers seem to sing about it so much.

And in case you are wondering, yes, I’m a west coast struttin’ and getting plenty of exercise. I’ll have to work on the consumption of alcohol, as I’m two drinks short of the suggested intake, at least during the week.
