MD's Question Anti-Bacterial Soaps

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.From Yahoo News comes an article titled "Doctor's Group Questions Anti-Bacterial Soaps" According to the article, the American Medical Association stated, "antibacterial soaps may be no more effective against germs than common soap, and could contribute to the threat posed by drug-resistant bacterial strains." The AMA has asked governmental agencies to find out whether antibacterial products "might contribute to the health threat created by excessive use of antibiotics" according to the article. On antibacterial soaps and products, the AMA had this to say: "There's no evidence that they do any good and there's reason to suspect that they could contribute to a problem" according to the article. That problem would be the increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which has had much news coverage lately. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (a trade group) had lobbied against the AMA "having any position on antibacterial products" as was stated in the article. The article included a statement from the trade group, "the public should not be deterred from using antibacterial products." In a blow to the AMA, the trade group also stated the following:
"The AMA's action was based on 'untested scientific theory' that personal-care products may cause antibiotic resistance, and the group instead blamed what it said were 50 million unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics that doctors write each year."Untested scientific theory? Isn't that the method quacks use? And don't forget, "50 million unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics that doctors write each year."
