Medical Doctors are not joining the AMA

ABCNEWS.com reports today that the American Medical Association is suffering from falling numbers resulting in a declining membership in the United State's largest doctor association.According to the article, about a third of the nation’s physicians, medical residents and medical students belong to the AMA, with the majority not supporting the organization. Reasons for the declining membership include "doctors’ reluctance to pay the relatively high association fee for what they get in return - a lobbying voice in Washington." Some poor endorsement issues were also noted in the article as reasons for a decline in MD membership. It is interesting to see the parallel in our "national" chiropractic organizations. More than two thirds of the chiropractic profession do not belong to either the ICA or the ACA. While I am not a member of the ACA, I would assume that most DCs have the same concerns as MDs do. There is a concern as to what benefits a member will receive for money spent and equally important there is a moral concern as to whether the organization has the doctor or themselves in their best interest. As a member of the ICA I do have concerns as to where my money is spent and also do any moral contradictions exist in ICA endorsements of other organizations or commercial entities.
