Medical school applications decline for second year
Dr. Mike email to the editor
NEW YORK, Aug 31 -- The overall number of students applying to US medical schools has declined slightly for the second year in a row, with the drop in male applicants greater than the drop in female applicants, according to a report in the September 1st issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The number of minority applicants has also declined slightly, but not as dramatically as in past years, report Dr. Barbara Barzansky and colleagues at the American Medical Association.

In 1997, 43,020 students applied to medical school compared with 41,004 in 1998, an overall decline of 4.7%.

"This is the second consecutive year that the number of applicants decreased," the authors write. In 1997, there were 8.4% fewer applicants than in 1996, and it looks like the trend is continuing in 1999.
