Medical School Applications Drop in 1999

Nando Health/Science reported the results of a survey today stating that medical school applications have dropped in 1999 marking three straight years in a row of decline.

According to the article, applications dropped 6% from 1998 to 1999 and although possible reasons for the decline were not studied, suggestions regarding the downward trend have been made.

Interestingly, the article stated that 66 percent of medical schools have added instruction in alternative medicine such as herbal medicine and acupuncture.

Would suggesting that medical school enrollment may be down as a result of medicine now being the third leading cause of death in the US be considered "medical bashing" or is that just a simple stating of the facts?

More hours, less pay, more deaths and errors, less cultural recognition and prestige, more suggestions as to why there are less applicants in medical school?
