Medical Specialties Becoming Increasingly Blurred

YourHealthDaily brings us an article from the Boston Globe titled "Turf Wars Ignite As Medical Specialists Reinvent Themselves"The article is focused on the rapid changes occurring in medical specialties that are blurring the lines as to what it is each specialty practitioner does. The article states that there are a "series of battle lines being drawn as the old divisions between medical specialties become increasingly blurred." For example, radiologists are performing surgeries and according to the article, they now call themselves "interventional radiologists." According to the article, psychiatrists trained to do therapy are now spending their days dispensing drugs, which is displacing pharmacologists who are supposedly the experts when it comes to drug dispensing. Pimple and zit popping dermatologists are now surgically sucking out fat cells and smoothing out wrinkles which according to the article, is the very cosmetic work plastic surgeons went to school for. What about ophthalmologists? They are now performing laser surgery in hopes of making eye wear obsolete which puts other ophthalmologists out of business. The article states that "the world of medical specialization is being turned on its head - raising doubts about whether specialists are adequately trained in their ever-evolving specialties." This has raised the question as to "whether money drives the system rather than doctors' skills and patients' needs." Does money drive the system or are all these changes being done to better serve the folks? As B.J. Palmer had so often said, "Who can anchor to an un anchored mind?"
