By Michael Dorausch, DC

On Sunday morning, November 2, an estimated 39,000 runners of every pace, ability and marathon experience level, will run 26.2 miles through the streets of 5 New York City boroughs. In addition, more than 2 million spectators are expected to turn out to cheer on family, friends, and fellow runners. The 2008 New York City Marathon, presented by ING, will start in Staten Island at the base of the Verrazano Bridge, and finish in Central Park.

New York Marathon Route
The 5 borough 26.2 mile course begins at the base of the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island. Runners will cross into Brooklyn, covering about 13 miles before heading into Queens on a short trek to the Queensboro Bridge. Manhattan is on the other side, along with a ginormous cheering crowd at about the 16 mile point on 1st Avenue. Runners will continue north on 1st Ave, entering the Bronx around mile 20, returning back in Manhattan a mile later and the homestretch along 5th Ave. With their sites set, runners will enter Central Park around mile 24 for their final 2.2 miles to the finish line.

The official NYC Marathon website (www.nycmarathon.org) has a 2008 pdf course map which displays the NY Marathon Route, Mile Markers, Kilometer Markers, and ING Cheering Zones.

Having grown up in NY and being an NYC marathon event volunteer as a teenager I'm excited for everyone taking on the challenge. The Los Angeles Marathon doesn't take place until March 2009, and we are helping to prepare our local runners for that event. I've addressed thoughts on chiropractic and the LA Marathon in the past. Long Island and NYC Chiropractors will be on hand as they were in 2007. Many have volunteered services.
