Palmer Has Strong Presence at Recent FICS Symposium, WFC Congress — In addition to its role as one of the primary sponsors, Palmer College had a strong presence and active participation in the 2009 FICS (International Federation of Sports Chiropractic) Symposium, held April 29, in conjunction with the World Federation of Chiropractic’s (WFC) 10th Biennial Congress April 30 – May 2, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The FICS program included six 20-minute lectures on sports chiropractic clinical subjects, and six 10-minute original research presentations on subjects relevant to sports chiropractic practice, selected from a Call for Papers.Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West Campus alumnus Roland Noirat, D.C., is the president of FICS. Four other West Campus alumni were among the featured speakers, including: Ed Feinberg, D.C., (West Campus professor and West Campus Sports Council faculty advisor); Eduardo Bracher, D.C., Brazil; Greg Uchacz, D.C., Canada; and Saul Luengas, D.C., Mexico. In addition, Alex Steinbrenner, D.C., Germany, a graduate of Palmer’s Davenport Campus, is the FICS Secretary-General and gave a keynote presentation. Several current student members of the West Campus Sports Council also attended the symposium. Thomas Milus, D.C., Ph.D., West Campus clinical professor and alumni representative, hosted a special lunch for Palmer alumni, attended by approximately 60 guests.

“With (Palmer’s West Campus) being my alma matter, I was so proud to see such amazing student (and faculty) representation,” said Dr. Uchacz, president of The College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Canada) and chiropractor for members of the Canadian teams at the Winter Olympic Games in 2002 and 2006.
“I was extremely impressed with the direction, focus and magnitude of the West Campus Sports Council. In talking with everyone, I was astounded at the sports-focused momentum taking place. I found the Palmer students to be particularly informed, knowledgeable and gracious. It is especially comforting to know that the next generation of sports-minded chiropractors is going to fall into the hands of individuals like them.”
The Symposium also included a “toast and roast” of Thomas Hyde, D.C., in honor of his distinguished career in the field of sports chiropractic, in which participants included West Campus alumni Richard Robinson, D.C., Canada, founding president of the West Sports Council (and chiropractor for the Canadian Summer and Winter Olympic teams), and Kate Hood, D.C., Canada, also a past president of the West Sports Council.
Florida Campus Faculty Take Top Research Prize at WFC Biennial Congress — Shawn He, M.D., associate professor, and Veronica Dishman, Ph.D., professor, both from Palmer’s Florida Campus in Port Orange, received the prestigious Scott Haldeman Award at the WFC congress. Scott Haldeman, D.C., M.D., Ph.D., chairman of the WFC Research Council, presented the award to Dr. He.
The WFC congress was well-attended, with more than 1,000 doctors of chiropractic and students from 38 countries, the largest ever in the history of the WFC. The title of Drs. He and Dishman’s paper was, “Motor Neuronal Degeneration Following Knee Joint Immobilization in the Guinea Pig: An Animal Model of Vertebral Subluxation Complex.”
Dr. He presented the study during the Thursday afternoon session, and was then selected as one of two keynote presenters on Saturday in front of more than 1,000 attendees, where he was awarded the first prize.
“I would like to thank Palmer College for supporting my participation in this conference, and in particular Dr. Martin (Florida Campus president) and Dr. Gran (Florida Campus dean of Academic Affairs) for their consistent encouragement,” said Dr. He. “But most importantly, all of the attendees now know the name of Palmer College of Chiropractic’s Florida Campus.”
