Pregnancy and the Dangers of Aspirin

"If you're pregnant, don't reach for the aspirin" reads the first sentence in a recent article from Cox News service.According to the article, there are three common rules to follow during pregnancy. Pregnant women should not smoke, should not drink alcohol, and should not take drugs unless they are prescribed by a doctor. (are prescribed drugs safer than un-prescribed drugs?) Apparently some pregnant women may not realize that over-the-counter remedies such as aspirin and ibuprofen are in fact drugs and can potentially be hazardous to an unborn babies health. These drugs can cause high blood pressure in newborns. According to the article, a recent study just published found that pregnant women were routinely taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and not telling their doctors about it. Why were doctors not aware? Either doctors were not asking, or the mothers to be were not aware of the potentially dangerous side effects. One theory suggested in the study was that women may be uneducated about the dangerous of taking drugs, especially when those drugs can be purchased without a prescription. This is the second article posted today that shows a relationship involving over-the-counter medications and a lack of education provided to those who will potentially take them. Parents need better education regarding over-the-counter and prescription medications. They need to know that in many instances these drugs are potentially dangerous, possibly not effective, and may affect the quality of their and/or their children's health.
