Researchers reported at a neuroscience conference this weekend that the use of Ritalin, a drug used to treat children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may alter the structure of the brain resulting in long-term changes.According to a report on MSNBC, the changes look similar to brain tissue changes seen when using stimulants such as cocaine or other amphetamines (ritalin is an amphetamine). One may think that a dose of Ritalin passes through the body and is all gone, however, the lead researcher of the study found that Ritalin has the potential for causing long-lasting changes in brain cell structure and function. Structure of the brain governs function of the brain. The nervous system, which includes the brain, controls and coordinates all function in the body. What if the structure of the nervous system were to be altered in some way? What if a drug were to change the circuitry of the brain and nervous system, how would that affect the function of the nervous system? Children, primarily in the U.S., are being given Ritalin every day and according to the article, there is a need to look at Ritalin and its affects on the brain more closely.
