Ritalin, Children, and Scandal
planetc1.com-news email to the editor

An attention grabbing headline from The Washington Post reads...

"Scandal! They Haven't Tested Ritalin on the Children It's Prescribed For! Scandal! They're Going to Test Ritalin on the Children"

According to the article, Ritalin, a drug used in treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is being prescribed to children as young as two. The drug however has not been tested or approved for use in children under the age of six.

And according to some study estimates, "150,000 to 200,000 children between the ages of 2 and 4 in the United States are currently receiving prescriptions" of ritalin, according to the article.

So, what to do? Do we continue to drug kids without studies to back up the efficacy of such use? How about doing drug studies on two year olds so that more kids can be put on these drugs? That's what's going on to happen in research centers this year. Drug trials will begin on kids as young as two years old.

According to the article, one anti-ritalin activist stated that, "To call it (ritalin) a disease is ridiculous, and to say it's hard to treat is meaningless. What we're doing is drugging our kids instead of improving family life and schools."
