If you are a regular reader of news from the World Chiropractic Alliance you have probably already read about “H.R. 2560” which is intended as an amendment to the Social Security Act to clarify the scope of chiropractic services in the United States.

House Bill 2560 will:

  • Amend the Social Security Act to clarify the scope of chiropractic services that may be furnished under the Medicare program and to state specifically that “chiropractors are the only health care professionals qualified under that program to furnish those services.”
  • Set up a separate provider category just for chiropractic – we’ll no longer be lumped into the same box as medical doctors.
  • Prevent M.D.s and D.O.s from claiming to provide chiropractic services (and get paid for them).
  • Ensure that the “medical necessity” criteria will not apply to chiropractic care.
  • “This bill will not only reshape the definition of chiropractic in federal policy… it will blow the lid off the definition of chiropractic in federal policy… We will make it clear once and for all that chiropractic is equal, but unique.” – U.S. Representative Donald Manzullo

“This powerful legislative initiative has been so thoughtfully crafted and is so innovative, opening new doors for chiropractor and chiropractic patient alike in Medicare, that it deserves the strong and immediate support of everyone in the chiropractic profession.” – CJ Mertz, D.C., President, International Chiropractors Association

“This is the most important legislative issue chiropractic has faced since the licensing laws. It will set the tone for chiropractic for generations to come. With support from all field doctors, and the combined strength of the three major organizations that make up the Chiropractic Coalition, we will finally win this major victory in Congress.” – Terry A. Rondberg, D.C., President, World Chiropractic Alliance

“This legislation offers our profession the best chance of solving many Medicare problems. It’s proof that the Coalition is an effective and action-oriented group of like-minded organizations working together for the good of chiropractic.” – Gary Horwin, D.C., President, Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations.

    An Important Precedent
Once HR 2560 is part of the Medicare language, it can be adapted for other federal legislation. It’s a “win-win” bill that will help all chiropractors, and benefit our patients throughout the country.

Your help is needed to get this bill passed
To pass the House, we need to win the votes of a majority of Representatives, and many of them still think chiropractic is a form of medicine for low-back pain only.

You have to tell your U.S. Representatives that we are a unique profession and that you want them to co-sponsor and support this bill. Your position as a voter makes you a powerful lobbyist. Use that power to create a better profession!

All it takes is a few minutes for you to write a letter (or personalize the sample one we’ve prepared) and fax it to your legislators.

Security measures make delivery of postal mail very difficult, so use your fax instead. Find your Representatives’ fax number at www.congress.org (just type in your zip code and click on the “info” link under the photo of your Representative).

Some of our chiropractic pioneers spent days – even weeks – in jail fighting for the licensing laws they knew would protect their rights. Won’t you spend a few minutes right now to do the same thing (and you don’t have to sit behind bars to do it!)
