The Power of Influence
planetc1.com-news email to the editor
By Shawn Powers, D.C.

Your future depends on many things but mostly on you. - Frank Tyger

Influence is a skill we must master if we are positively going to affect other people’s lives. It is not about controlling or manipulating others but having the ability to shift a person’s perceptions, emotions, and actions.

Two interesting events occurred recently that made me want to scream and yell, “What are you crazy?” I know that yelling this kind of statement would not be effective if I wanted to influence another human being. I took a deep breath and handled each situation with tact and graciousness.

The first was meeting a very famous runner and columnist for Runner’s world. While discussing chiropractic, he stated he would never go to a chiropractor regardless of the benefits. The one time he did get adjusted, was the only time he ever had pain in his neck, so no way would he ever go back. Now mind you, this person is not old however, he looks old and decrepit. He is hyperlordotic in his cervical spine and has an extreme thoracic kyphosis.

The second event happened while receiving a massage. The therapist said there is a bone out of place would you like me to adjust you? Yikes! I flatly said NO, thank you. Later I asked “do most people let you adjust them?” Some do and some don’t he replied. As you can imagine after I was off the table and out of the room I had a discussion with him and the management.

What is going on here? What can we do about events such as these to prevent them from occurring? How can we influence more people? EDUCATE!

Success Tips And Action Steps
1. Start the educational process on the first visit. Ask permission to teach them and then empower them. Provide ongoing effective education forever.

2. Never adjust on the first visit.

3. Prior to the first adjustment, review their x-rays. Explain and verify that they understand the causes, significance, and affects of their subluxations. Inform them how the adjustment works and how their body might respond to the adjustment.

4. Call after the first adjustment to see how they responded. Imagine if the runner had a chiropractor that did this!

5. Teach practice members and prospects that only chiropractors have the proper training to deliver specific adjustments. Alert them that allowing anyone else to attempt to do so could endanger them.
