The Times, They Are a-Changing

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Happy New Year everyone!

We have lots of catching up to do regarding news of vaccines and vaccination in the major media. Several news sources have reported on the recent decisions of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to suggest anthrax vaccination for government and U.S. postal workers. The reports tell us that few have opted for the vaccination and they tell us why as well.

The Washington Post featured an article on December 28, 2001 titled, “Vaccine Offer Draws Few Postal Workers” and the comments from those interviewed suggest to me that Americans are better educated about the risks associated with vaccination then they were just a few years ago.

America has a choice. That is one of our greatest freedoms. According to the Post article, one postal worker claimed that he “religiously” followed the schedule of 60 days of antibiotic treatment yet he chose not to receive the vaccination. Another, in what the Washington Post called the echoed comments of numerous postal workers interviewed, was suspicious of the vaccine and would not take it. The worker further said that he chose not to take the antibiotics either stating, “I trust in God only.” (Who does the healing?)

An article from the New York Times brings news that the president of the New York region’s postal workers union has objected to the anthrax vaccine program being offered stating that, “they want to experiment on our people.” The union president was also quoted stating, “Those vaccinations can cause all kind of harm. Until I see the Supreme Court and the Congress taking those vaccinations, I don’t want them to be giving it to us.”

News from Nando Media tells a similar story. Only a handful out of thousands have made the choice to be vaccinated. However, the part of the article that I found most interesting was this statement: “These are intelligent people who now know a lot about the subject” and thus can choose. They have been given the information (regarding benefits and risk) and they have made a choice as to what is right for them.
