Course Outline: Risk Management
1. Four Elements of Malpractice- In order to have a true case of malpractice a plaintiff has to have credible evidence of four necessary elements: duty, breach of duty, causation and damages. Without any one of the four no malpractice can be awarded. (One hour)
2. Why do patients sue; an in depth look at the seven reasons why patients sue including case studies. (Two hours)
3. Common patient complaints and how to stop/avoid them: Six of the most common complaints heard by staff and doctors that serve as warning signs of possible trouble and how to stop/avoid/handle each situation. (Two hours)
4. Doctor Patient Staff Relationship Issues: A look into the most common reason for malpractice with case studies. (Two hours)
5. Doctor Patient Staff Communication: Models of communication, avoiding conflict, reduction of stress, rapport building. (Three hours)
6. Team Purpose and Priorities: Building your healthcare team, five qualities of a successful team. (Two hours)
